Red wines Schiava

Schiava is a red grape variety that is a symbol and typical of Alto Adige .

The name “ Schiava ” (Vernatsch in German) has origins in the Middle Ages and comes from the Latin expression “cum vineis sclavis”, which means “with enslaved vines”. This refers to the row cultivation method with which the vine was grown, tying it to a support to control its development.

Many scholars consider Schiava to be native to Trentino Alto Adige. However, some credible hypotheses trace it back to Slavonia , a region in eastern Croatia . It is believed that the vine arrived in Italy thanks to the Lombards during their invasions, adapting to the Alto Adige terroir.

Wines produced from Schiava grapes have a bright ruby red color, a fruity aroma with barely perceptible notes of almonds, a low alcohol content and a light body.
