Chardonnayis an international white grape variety, grown in all wine-growing areas of the world.
The origins of Chardonnay are unclear. Some scholars suggest Middle Eastern roots, while others believe it was born from a spontaneous cross between a pre-domesticated vine and a grape variety from Illyria . It has gradually spread throughout the world since the end of the19th century , starting from Burgundy. It is said that its name derives fromChardonnay, the namesake town of theMaconianin Burgundy. Some attribute its birth to the Holy Land, on the hills of Jerusalem, where the Crusaders would have found some vine shoots that produced an exceptional wine so much so that they recognized the name of "la porte du Seigneur", whose translation in Hebrew would be "Shaar Adonai".
