Bitters

Bitters are alcoholic beverages with a predominantly bitter taste, obtained by infusing botanicals such as herbs, roots, fruits and spices in alcohol or wine. Their name derives from the English term “bitter”, which means bitter, and refers to the taste sensation they cause.

The history of bitters is linked to the pharmaceutical and medicinal tradition, as they were originally used as elixirs and remedies against various diseases. Bitter substances, in fact, have the property of stimulating digestion, circulation and metabolism, as well as having tonic and exciting effects. The first examples of bitters date back to the Middle Ages , when alchemists and monks prepared infusions of bitter herbs for therapeutic purposes. During the Renaissance, bitters also became popular as aperitifs and digestives, thanks to the spread of new spices and exotic plants from the colonies.

Today, bitters are among the most popular and versatile drinks in the world of mixology, thanks to their ability to transform the flavor profile of cocktails, adding depth and complexity with just a few drops. Bitters are fascinating drinks, which encapsulate centuries of history, culture and tradition. They are products that stimulate the senses and the imagination, and offer endless possibilities for experimentation and creativity.
